Secondary learning

at Hilliard

Hilliard Secondary continues to focus on cultivating positive relationships among students, teachers, family, and the community. The Junior Secondary curriculum begins in Year 6, providing students with opportunities to work both independently and cooperatively in a secure and nurturing environment. Students are assigned a small group of core teachers for most of the day, which eases their transition from Primary to Secondary schooling. They are also encouraged to explore their passions, consider their strengths and interests, and receive guidance in self-reflection and understanding of character development.

During their Senior Secondary years (Years 9 and 10), students continue to build their knowledge and understanding of the Australian Curriculum while also preparing for their chosen courses beyond Hilliard. Pathway Planning and individual learning needs remain a priority. In Year 9, students participate in the Life Orientation program, which focuses on developing values such as independence, interdependence, persistence, and resilience through various activities, including outdoor education, service learning, camping, and personal development. These programs aim to enhance students' readiness for further education and careers.

Hilliard participates in inter-school competitions such as Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Cricket, Swimming, Athletics, and Cross-Country, and offers private music lessons and opportunities to perform in musical ensembles and choirs. Student Leadership is an integral part of the school's service education program, with students taking part in various fundraising activities and events throughout the year.

The Hilliard community is diverse, with a rich variety of cultures and languages. The institution has a strong and rigorous Diversity of Learners policy to cater to the community's needs. As the students move through the school, they develop an understanding of themselves as learners through tailored programs in the classroom and formal Individual Pathway Planning starting in Year 7 and continuing throughout the year to Year 10.
