“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” — 1 Peter 4:10
This year, Hilliard is thrilled to launch an exciting new chapter in our educational journey: Service Learning. This initiative isn’t just a new subject; it is a response to our students' hearts. 2025 data from the ACER Student Wellbeing survey, and subsequent conversations with the students, revealed a powerful desire among our cohort to have more meaningful opportunities to serve others. We listened, and Service Learning is the result.
Service Learning is designed to be the bridge between the classroom and the community, and will be taught from Prep through to Year 10. By weaving together high-level curriculum outcomes with our Encounter program, we are providing students with genuine, project-based, and student-driven learning opportunities. This isn't just about "doing a good deed"—it’s about students using their academic skills to solve real-world problems and, in doing so, Revealing Jesus to our neighbors.
We are already hitting the ground running with several local organizations. These partnerships allow our students to step out of the classroom and into roles of active citizenship and ministry. Current collaborators include:
● ADRA
● Salvation Army
● Moonah Community Centre and Moonah Community Gardens
● Glenview Home in Glenorchy
Through these connections, students will see firsthand how their efforts can lift a community and bring joy to those around them.
The feedback from the students has been overwhelmingly positive. There is a new energy on campus as students take the lead on projects they care about. Whether they are getting their hands dirty in the community gardens or spending quality time with residents at Glenview, our students are discovering that they don't have to wait until they graduate to make a difference—they can start right now.
